I love painting people, particularly people who intrigue me. When I saw this man's photo, I knew I had to paint him. The eyes, the smoke, everything about him was exotic and mysterious. Muted purples and blues give the piece moodiness, and my intention is for the viewer to focus on the center of the painting—on his features—while everything else fades a bit into the background, as if obscured by the smoke in the space he inhabits.
