The art of employing vitreous enamels is called enameling. Enamel is made by fusing powdered glass to a metal surface in a kiln between 1,400 °F-1,500 °F. The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. More traditional painting techniques can be achieved by employing watercolor enamels or by grinding very fine enamel powders with special oils which are burnt off in the kiln before the final firing. Multiple firings are needed to achieve the desired image.
