Artist Opening Reception for Eric Layne - Square Roots

Creating art has always been my primary mode of self expression. During my high school years I was interested mostly in drawing and I focused much of my time on art classes. I considered pursuing a higher education in art but ultimately went to medical school. Through med school and residency art largely fell by the wayside, but as I settled into a career as a psychiatrist and had kids who were beginning to draw and play with watercolors, I began painting along with them and eventually spent more and more of my time visiting museums and galleries, reading and learning, and developing a strategy to teach myself painting.

My foundation in drawing and composition helped greatly. I spent about eight years in this pursuit and through that process I began to find my style. I paint in oils and tend to use a fairly limited palette of five to seven colors which has challenged me to develop skill at seeing and mixing colors accurately. I am drawn to paintings that contain contrasts and so found myself choosing subjects in which I could create contrast in light, colors, and edges. Lately I have considered my work to be a form of metamodern art in which I explore the juxtaposition of traditional, serious modern art with the ironic and satirical postmodern pop culture of my youth and early adult life.

Artist Opening Reception for Brenden Spivey - Joy and Energy in Abstraction

Brenden grew up in Newark, Ohio, just east of Columbus. His fascination with technology and fashion led him to a career in IT for a fashion company. He always knew that there was more to him in the creative space but was unsure in what capacity it would manifest itself.

“Being surrounded by beautiful things and having an appreciation for them is something that always inspired me whether it be a pair of shoes, a shirt, photography. There was always something about how it made me feel when I looked at it.”

“Working full time in IT has many demands and finding a hobby was something that I struggled with for relaxation. Columbus has a dynamic art scene and I’ve been lucky enough to visit numerous galleries and get to know several artist and collectors. The more time I spent around beautiful art work created by local self-taught or ‘outsider’ artists, the more inspired I became to create my own work.”

Artist Opening Reception for Gina Wolfrum - Natural Sparkle - Landscapes that Twinkle

Gina Wolfrum is a contemporary, mixed-media artist who returned to her artistic roots after leaving the stressful corporate world and relocating to a farm in rural Ohio.  She instinctively transitioned back to the fine arts training she had received in her youth when an interior designer pulled her into the world of decorative art and murals.

Wolfrum studied in studios around the country to develop her use of color, texture and natural elements in exquisite homes and businesses, both locally and throughout the US for a number of years.  Her decorative art has been featured in books, trade journals, television and various websites.

In October of 2018, her entry Amethyst Awakening, ranked in the top 25 at ArtPrize10/Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Her work using natural elements, crystals, and glass have gained popularity in exhibits and have received monetary awards.

Gina lives with her husband and a very large dog in Northwest Ohio on a quiet farm surrounded by flower beds and bird feeders.

The subject matter of my artwork is largely based on the observation of the present vs past vs future. It is always influenced by my notice and attraction to daily transformations; the ephemeral, the broad and minute. This is what makes art and artists valuable. With a personal accounting and unique documentation any given piece can express the emotional quality of the passing of time.

As a painter, I adore color and shape. Growing up near New York City in the 1960s and 70s, I was moved by the strong, bold, gestural compositions and the seeming spontaneity in the work of the abstract expressionists. Art was everywhere; in advertising, billboards, newspapers and publications such as “Look” and “Life” magazines which consistently featured articles about contemporary art. The bold colors, rhythms and subject matter I attempt to express in my artwork are due to these early influences.

Living now in Cleveland for 35 years, I call it home. I like to experiment with the relativity of color; how colors influence each other by proximity. I expose relationships in color by working in layers. Many under layers are not immediately visible in a given piece. These initial colors and shapes, however, ground the finished product by influencing colors yet to be applied and by showing up in glimmers and slices. I like to include a surprise color which at first glance may seem incongruous but has a way of solidifying the composition. My finished pieces are impressionistic landscapes and abstractions. All of my subject matter is derived from my observation of nature, including my flower gardens. I am inspired by the sense of disorder, yet perfect organization, I feel when in nature. My mediums are acrylic on canvas, acrylic and paper collage on canvas and encaustic.

Artist Opening Reception for Adam Kolp - 2020 Invision

Coming to terms with the fact that I was losing my eyesight was actually when I first began to see the world much more clearly.  We often spend our days over scheduled with things to do and places to be. Consumed by brief memories of what something was or the thought of what it could have been, wethen quickly move on to the next pressing moment. We can easily get caught up living in this rapid paced blur, and unknowingly are missing out on the incredible beauty that surrounds us in any given moment. I realize that losing my eyesight was a wake up call. I needed to take the time to see the world we live in. It is such a beautiful and inspiring gift to have the opportunity to slow down and appreciate every moment and each amazing experience. This was the turning point for who I am now and the artist that I have become. TO SEE ALL OF ADAM’S WORK, PLEASE CLICK HERE

With the discovery of fire, early humans began to notice that aromatic smoke was produced by burning dried plants. As herbs, roots, resins and barks are changed from their physical form ("of this world"), they are changed by the element of fire into smoke (spirit world form).

This transformation is indicative of the spirit within substances. Throughout human history, aromatic plants have been used in the daily activities of people from every culture.

Soulshine Tavern located next to the gallery will be open for lunch and dinner.
